REPORT ON DIG MEETING HELD FRIDAY 27 AUGUST 2010
We welcomed four new members to our meeting this month. Despite the fact that we had absolutely nothing planned, we had an enjoyable meeting.
Ray Bagnall told us about his recent visit to an exhibition in Christchurch which he thoroughly recommended. Christchurch Museum. 20 August 2010 – 20 February 2011.
The Heart of the Great Alone: This remarkable exhibition of early Antarctic photography. Herbert George Ponting’s extraordinary images record Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1910 – 1913 and Frank Hurley’s dramatic icescapes were taken during Ernest Shackleton’s polar expedition on Endurance in 1914-16. It coincides with the 100th anniversary of Scott's journey to the South Pole. Presented to King George V and today part of the Royal Photograph Collection, these images are among the finest examples of the artists’ work in existence. Canterbury Museum is the only venue for this exhibition outside the Queen’s galleries.
Mavis showed us photos of a large painting done by her grandfather….she grew up with this painting hanging over the fire place. 50 years ago the painting was lent to someone and consequently disappeared. It was recently discovered by Mavis’s brother, in the Motueka recycling shop and is now safely back in the family, much to Mavis’s delight.
Following some discussion on the merits of different photo editing programs........PhotoFiltre, Picaso, FastStone and GIMP were some of those mentioned, Helen did a short demo on using the lasso and cloning tools in PhotoFiltre.
Everyone then enjoyed looking at last month's photographs on our Shutterfly website. The subject was ART and there was an excellent response to this subject. (Just as well we nothing planned for the meeting!) It was a really interesting collection and we had comments on the photos by the contributors. It just goes to show what can be found when you are out and about. You never know when you will find something worth a photo.
Members were reminded that the photos should be taken with their digital camera during the month between meetings, and generally, keep to uploading 3 photos each. We want to encourage people to get out and use their cameras. This is becoming popular with the group and keeping to 3 photos each initially, is only a ‘time to view’ thing. Add more later if you wish.…..and don’t forget the ‘Favourites’ page.
It is also good to go back and re-look at some of the older albums. There are some really good photos there to look at. http://dignelson.shutterfly.com/
The subject for this month is SPRING
The date for the next meeting is Friday 24 September and we plan to visit the Myazu Gardens for an outdoor photo session, so there will be no meeting in the hall. However, we will have to think of a Plan B in case the weather is not good.
A reminder will be sent out.
